Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG)
At the Minster School, students’ aspirations for their future careers are supported by teachers and tutors. Students engage in a range of activities which develop their understanding of potential future careers and informs their future education and training plans. In addition, students’ employability and enterprise skills are developed through an engaging programme of activities across all Key Stages.
Key Stage Three: Years 7, 8 and 9
In Years 7 and 8 students are encouraged to explore careers based issues in Tutor time and engage in STEAM day, which focusses on collaboration, team work and problem solving. In Year 9, students are prepared for their GCSE options through:
- Sessions delivered by older students
- Tutor time discussions
- Discussions with their teachers and tutors
- Bespoke ‘Options’ and ‘Careers’ sessions
- An in-school open evening with access to all subject areas and our careers adviser
Key Stage Four: Years 10 and 11
In Year 10, students attend one ‘Wider Learning’ lesson per fortnight. Within this session students undertake a range of activities which prepare them for later life, including:
- Learning about future employment and education routes, including sessions delivered by Sixth Forms, Colleges and Apprenticeship providers
- Preparation for applications for further education and employment by developing a CV and standard application letter
- Participating in the ‘Tenner’ challenge, where students work in groups to make a profit from an initial £10 loan, including a market week in school. After the return of the initial loan, profits are then donated to charity.
- Developing financial capability by discovering more about salaries, tax, benefits and loans
In Year 11 all students have access to a 1:1 careers meeting with a qualified careers adviser, which can be booked by teachers, tutors or the student themselves. Students also take part in a Mock Interview, where after submitting a CV and application for a future career route they participate in a face-to-face interview with an external professional, from which they receive feedback.
In addition, students are prepared for their post-16 transition through
- tutor time sessions delivered by Sixth Form students
- discussions with tutors about their post-16 options
- ‘Post-16 Options’ evening.
